TT: 13 Luxury Items I Don't Own or Want

Thirteen LUXURY ITEMS I DON'T OWN OR WANT

I had a different TT all set but reading the CNN article on teens wanting luxury goods for back-to-school got me thinking about all the luxury items I neither own nor want. I will pay more for quality on certain things, but when it comes to frivolous fashion items I tend to balk.

1. An iPhone. I've got an mp3 player I rarely use and a cell phone that works just fine, so why would I want to spend $600 for something that hasn't gotten all the bugs worked out yet?
2. A Kate Spade, Petunia Picklebottom, Burberry, etc. diaper bag. Why pay $300 when you can go to Target and get a cute knock-off one for $30?
3. Seven for All Mankind, True Religion, Citizens of Humanity, etc. jeans. I have worn Lucky and Calvin Klein jeans that I've found at Ross or Filene's Basement but I refuse to pay $200 for a pair of pants.
4. A high-definition plasma screen television set. DH wants one so he'll probably end up buying himself one once he's paid off his student loans but I'd just as soon skip it. I hardly ever watch TV and our current set works perfectly well.
5. Manolo Blahnik, Jimmy Choo, Prada, etc. shoes. I'm not all that into shoes anyways, so why would I pay $400+ for a pair?
6. A Hummer. There's someone at our church who drives one, and I'd just love to ask him/her if that's what he/she really thinks Jesus would recommend driving.
7. A Bugaboo stroller. Yes, I've heard they really are very easy-to-use, yadda, yadda, yadda. But there's nothing that screams "I'm a yuppie mom!" louder than a $900 stroller.
8. Designer sunglasses. I used to have a pair of Ralph Lauren sunglasses I got in a 2-for-1 promotion with my regular glasses but I lost them. Since then, I've made do with Target cheapies.
9. A designer watch. I have a problem with things happening to my watches. The weird thing is that it's a different issue each time. Doesn't matter how much or how little I spend on a watch, it lasts about the same length of time.
10. A Wii or a PS3. DH has a PS2 that is almost exclusively used as a secondary DVD player. I can't remember the last time it was used to play a video game.
11. Nike Shox. Yes, they're cute. I'm sure they're comfortable. But I refuse to pay >$100 for a pair of sneakers.
12. Breast implants. I'd be tempted to get a lift if I ever won Powerball, but having gotten up to a DDD when nursing, I can definitely say that I would not want to go any larger than my normal size, LOL!
13. A much-younger trophy husband. The whole May/December thing isn't any more appropriate when it's the man who is younger. I'm sorry, but one's new spouse should not be the same age as one's children!

I agree with you on most of them...#1 is just ridiculous! Happy TT.

re: #5: they're definietely overpirced -- of no higher quality than $150 - $200 shoes. I think the price is part of the marketing (making them coveted).

I neither have nor want any of those. This was a great post!

the only one I have is a big lcd (not plasma) tv. It was my hubby's idea, and I have to admit, it's nice to curl up with some nights! LOL

Happy TT!

Great List, I agree with most of them.

We do want a plasma Television.
And the we will eventually purchase a Wii.

My mother is divorced from my dad and she married my step dad who is 10 years younger than she is. He is 45. The same age as my husband brother. He looks and acts much older than my mother.....to some people age is just that a number and doesn't apply to what they physically look like...my step dad has taken the place of my natural father who was never really in my life. Even though he is only 9 years older than myself.

Great TT though!

have to disagree on the jeans.......once you find a pair of jeans that fit like they were made for you, you will never go back!

but the rest.....yes....pretty much so!

Great TT! I don't understand the whole thing about the purses...most of those expensive ones are ugly! I get why people want them...it is just the name?

Yep, I think I agree with you on all of these, if even just because the prices on this stuff are ridiculous!

Love this list. Especially your comments on the sunglasses and watches. This ol' Gal loses sunglasses all the time (left my most expensive pair in a fitting room where I was trying on a $15 tshirt). And it seems I can break a $25 Timex as fast as I can destroy a more expensive watch. It's good to know I'm not alone!

I can't say any of those items has ever tempted me, either.

I agree with you on all of these

I don't have any of the things on your list! Guess we have a lot in common.

We totally agree with you on this list.
Except # 8.
We REALLY wouldn't mind having LOTS of pairs of designer sunglasses.
But then, we are Cats with Glasses...

I'm with you on most of those - I'd much rather spend my money on a luxury dinner than a luxury handbag. I'd rather go for a unique bag I found at a crafts market anyway.

Does a designer watch tell a different kind of time from a $20 one?

Not only do I not want any of these, but some of them I haven't even heard of.

No way to #1 - the iphone - it doesn't do ebooks and I don't want more gadgets in my purse. Besides, does anyone else think about how disgusting the screen will look after having it pressed against your face for an hour talking to you Mom? The cutie wants #4 - the hdtv thing - but I am so not fussed. And if he comes home with one, I still won't be interested in #13. I have a feeling the joy of the hardbody would wear thin real quick.

Yup, I'm with you...don't want!

I know I'm supposed to want a PS3 and a HD TV because I'm male but I don't. The only consumer electronics I want right now are a new stereo for my kitchen and a new PC...

I'm with you on all of those!
Thanks for visiting my geography TT.

I agree with most of it, but a friend of mine bought True Religion jeans and they made her butt dissapeer! I'd pay a lot for that to happen.

I want a Wii, but not an iPhone or breast implants...and we probably won't be getting a Wii until the price dropps!

I don't want any of those things either!!!

I have found that $75-$100 shoes are more comfortable than $10 ones, but I couldn't imagine spending more than that...and I love cute shoes.

Happy TT!

Manolo Blahnik, Jimmy Choo, Prada shoes look uncomfortable, so why on earth would anyone pay that kind of money to be tortured.

I do want a HDTV, if only because our old TV is about to die and I have been informed by the techies in my household that it will not work once everyone switches to HDTV.

Hubby who always loses his watches asked for a nice watch, so for our anniversary 10 years ago I bought matching Seiko watches. We both still have ours and we have only had to get new batteries for them once, I got them on sell and they have been a wonderful investment.

Having a teenage son and 11 year old daughter, that list made me realize how lucky I am! They've only asked for a laptop!!
Great TT and thanks for stopping by mine!

Hiya! Thanks for visiting my TT. :)

I've never felt a need for designer anything. Thrift store and dollar store prices (or even freebies) are even better. ;)
